About

My work has centred on unifying design activity and usability in a variety of contexts. As a Research Fellow at the London Knowledge Lab, I’ve focused on tools for pedagogy design, technology-enhanced learning (TEL), and interactive artefacts. My prior research was on using traditional design methods such as sketching to support software engineering. My areas of specialist knowledge are Physical Computing, Information Visualization, Human-Computer Interaction, and participatory design.

I am also a Lecturer on Physical Computing at Goldsmiths, University of London in the Department of Computing.

PREVIOUS WORK:
I was a Partner at design firm Tinker London (now closed), where we worked on projects that bridged the digital and physical worlds with interactive technology. I’ve worked as a consultant on a range of projects in both User Experience and Information Design/Analysis. See Publications & Work for a list of clients and projects.

In 2007, I completed PhD research at UCL Interaction Centre (UCLIC) in the area of Information Visualization Design methodology. My design method is called SoViz and is aimed at supporting software visualization design through collaboration and sketching. This is outlined in my doctoral dissertation, which you can view as a Flash document here. For a .pdf version (5.7 Mb), or if you are interested in visualization design, please contact me.

I was also a Research Assistant on the CLinical E-science Framework (CLEF), where completed usability research on the design of a system which will support research using anonymized healthcare records.

I received the “People’s Choice” award from the UCL Graduate School Research Images as Art competition for images that were produced in the course of my research in Information Visualization. Here are the winning images from 2006 and 2007. These were produced with software called Context Free and Processing.
